The Big Ask

In the next few months there will be a UK parliament bill that is to become the first Climate Change Law in the world to set legally binding government targets for carbon emissions.

This is undoubtably a ground-breaking achievement, and one that is largely in response to The Big Ask, Friends of the Earth's climate campaign. But as ground-breaking as it may be, it still isn't enough. There are a number of things missing from the bill that Friends of the Earth are still pushing for.

The Big Ask, Friends of the Earth's climate campaign is calling for a strong climate change law that:

- Includes the UK’s share of emissions from international shipping and aviation
- Commits the UK to cutting its emissions by 80 per cent
- Ensures steady progress by cutting emissions by at least 3 per cent a year

Day of Action

On Saturday April 5th, Welwyn Hatfield Friends of the Earth took to the streets of Hatfield as part of a national day of action. We were there to raise awareness and to gather support, highlighting the fact that in the face of all logic, Gordon Brown and his government are willfully ignoring the UK's share of international aviation and shipping emissions and have left them out of the law.

Local MP gives his support

The day was a massive sucess! We had several people dressed as Gordon Brown parading about the town centre, followed by campaigners waving placards and shouting for Gordon to stop ignoring aviation emissions. We also had people with clipboards walking about giving out leaflets and getting postcards signed. We generated a lot of interest, and good public support.

We got all of our allocated postcards signed and had to put together an identically worded petition so that we could continue asking the public to support us. The postcards and petitions will be collected together by Friends of the Earth head office before being delivered en masse to the Prime Minister.

Getting Involved

If you want to get involved yourself then e-mail your MP! All you have to do is go to either of the following links:

You can also contact Gordon Brown directly and let him know that you think that ignoring international avaition and shipping emmisions when calculating the UK's greenhouse emmissions is simply ludicrous.
