Local FOE groups exist to support the work of Friends of the Earth. We have the same beliefs and aims as the national organisation, but by working at a local level we are better equipped to deal with the issues that really affect our community.

Our group began life as North Mymms Friends of the Earth, and then later changed its name to Welwyn Hatfield Friends of the Earth in order to encompass a larger area.

The group is made up of a committee (who do the admin and organising), active members (who attend meetings, help out at events etc.) and supporters (who support the group financially, or by taking individual action on our campaigns).

We have members and supporters of all ages, and from all backgrounds and communities, with various levels of knowledge and experience on environment-related subjects. Some of us are hard-core hippies, some of us come from a corporate or scientific background, and most of us fall somewhere in between. What we all have in common is our belief in protecting our natural environment, and in making our community and our world a better place in which to live.

Members of the group are instrumental in responding to local and national Government consultations on environmental issues, and in putting pressure on local elected representatives. We also arrange educational talks and workshops, attend local events to provide information and advice, and work alongside other local community groups and organisations. Our past campaigns have included the promotion of recycling and public transport, tree preservation, and educating our community on how they can make a difference to climate change.

We meet up on a monthly basis to introduce new members to the group, discuss and plan our campaigns, and to generally be social! There is room for everyone in our group, no matter how much or how little time they have available.

To become a member or supporter of Welwyn Hatfield Friends of the Earth, see our Get Involved page.

If our group doesn’t cover the area in which you live, you can find other local groups at community.foe.co.uk/local_groups/find_a_group/index.
